Sodium carbonate is commonly used in water & wastewater treatment to raise the pH of acidic water. Unlike neutralising filters, it does not cause hardness problems in the treated water. It is also used to reduce water hardness caused by calcium & magnesium minerals in the water. Used in metallurgical processes like desulphurisation of pig iron, as a flux agent for gold extraction, and production of lithium carbonate. Also used in powdered detergents & cleaners.
