Sodium percarbonate is an addition compound of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. It is a stable source of alkaline hydrogen peroxide which is environmentally friendly, as it decomposes to water, oxygen and soda ash. It has strong cleaning, bleaching, stain removal and odour removal properties. It is widely used in home and laundry cleaning products. It is also used as a cleaning agent for all types of homebrewing equipment, including beer lines, pots, fermenters and heat exchangers. It functions as an oxidising agent to remove sulphur odours in sewage. It has been found to be highly effective when used in the photo-Fenton process for treating coking wastewater.
