Ammonia Solution
Ammonia solution, also known as aqueous ammonia or ammonium hydroxide solution, comes from the dissolution of ammonia gas into water. It is a clear, colourless liquid with strong characteristic pungent ammonia odour. Ammonia solution is safer to use and handle than ammonia gas because the vapour pressure is greatly reduced.
Ammonia solution is an inorganic chemical that is widely used in various household cleaners. It has various industrial uses, such as reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) stack emissions at incinerators and power plants, water treatment plants to prolong the beneficial disinfectant effects of chlorine, pesticides, as a precursor for some alkyl amines and in furniture making to darken or stain wood containing tannic acid. Other industrial uses include textiles, manufacture of rayon, rubber, fertilisers, refrigeration, condensation polymerization, pharmaceuticals, ammonia soaps, lubricants, ink manufacture, explosives, ceramics, detergents and food additives.
The Department of Health lists Ammonia solution as a Schedule 7 chemical approved for addition to drinking water in Western Australia for the generation of chloramines for disinfection.
