Lactic acid, also known as alpha-hydroxypropionic acid (AHA) or 2-hydroxypropanoic acid, is an organic acid belonging to the carboxylic acid family. It is present in certain plant juices, in the blood and muscles of animals, and in the soil.
Lactic acid is used in tanning leather and dyeing wool; as a flavouring agent and preservative in processed cheese, salad dressings, pickling, in carbonated drinks and in the fermentation of beer; and as a catalyst or raw material in various chemical processes. It is also used as a humectant in cosmetics and skin care products. Lactic acid is also used in some cleaning liquids as a descaling agent.
